New Delhi: In the ongoing border dispute between India and China, there has been a new twist by the posting of posters on the walls of the Chinese Embassy in Delhi in support of Taiwan ‘s National Day. Beijing is infuriated by this action. The state newspaper ‘Global Times’ is expressing displeasure, saying that it is like playing with fire and this already deteriorating India-China relations will get worse. Earlier, China had expressed its displeasure over the advertisement given in the newspapers of India for celebrating Taiwan’s national day and said that India should take care of One China policy. China expressed resentment because it considers Taiwan its part. Therefore, he keeps advising everyone including India not to call Taiwan a separate country.
The game of ‘China’ is ‘People’s Republic of China’ and ‘Republic of China’ do not recognize each other’s sovereignty. Both claim to be official China, claiming to be the official representative of Mainland China and Taiwan Island. The official name of what we call China is ‘People’s Republic of China’ and what we know as Taiwan is its official name ‘Republic of China’. China is connected in both names. In practice, Taiwan is an island that has been independent since 1950. But China considers it as its rebel state. While Taiwan considers itself to be an independent and sovereign nation, China believes that Taiwan should join China and then it has to use force.
Understand History
To understand this controversy, one has to go into history. In history, it is known that from 1642 to 1661 Taiwan was a colony of the Netherlands. The Ching dynasty came to power in China in 1644 and unified China. In 1895, Ching ceded the island of Taiwan to the Japanese Empire. However in 1911 there was a Chinhai revolution in which the Ching dynasty had to withdraw from power. After this, the government of Comingtang was formed in China. All the areas which were under Ching Ravansh got to the Comingtang government. China’s official name was changed to the Republic of China during the Comingtang government. The story of this tricky dispute between China and Taiwan begins from 1949. This was the period when the Communists, led by Maotse Tung, defeated the Nationalist Comingtang Party led by Chiang Kai-shek in the Civil War in China. The naval power of the Communists who came to power in China was negligible.
‘China’ Claims
After the defeat of the Communists, Comingtang went to Taiwan to form his government. Meanwhile, in the second world war, when Japan was defeated, it handed over control of Taiwan to Comingtang. The transfer took place on the basis of two treaties. Meanwhile, a dispute arose as to whom Japan gave Taiwan. This is because the Communists were in power in China and Comingtang ruled in Taiwan. In 1911, Comingtang renamed the country as Republic of China and remained the same name until 1950. When Comingtang formed the government in Taiwan in 1959, he said that although we have lost in the main part of China, we still officially lead China and not the Communist Party, so we should be recognized. On the other hand, Mao said that we should get official recognition. Meanwhile, members of the Communist Party raised the demand that the name of the country is given by Comingtang and now they are going to Taiwan and calling themselves Republic of China. In such a situation, he formed his government and gave the country a new name – People’s Republic of China. Since then, both ‘China’ kept calling themselves official China and on this basis they wanted recognition from the world community.
Recognition of race politics Meanwhile, the world was moving quickly. Earlier Taiwan (Republic of China) was also part of the UN Security Council. Taiwan had full support of the US during the Cold War, but then the situation changed completely. Things started changing for Taiwan since 1971. US President Richard Nixon identified China and said Taiwan would have to withdraw from the UN Security Council. China became part of the U.N. Security Council since 1971, and in 1979, Taiwan’s official recognition with the U.N. ended. Since then Taiwan began to collapse.
America’s ‘Taiwan Relations Act’
However, in response to this, the US Congress passed the ‘Taiwan Relations Act’ under which it was decided that America will supply military weapons to Taiwan and if China attacks Taiwan in any way, then America Will take it very seriously Since then, the emphasis of America has been on the policy of maintaining the balance of relations with both China and Taiwan. The biggest tension between the US and China over Taiwan was seen when China conducted missile tests to influence the Taiwanese presidential election in 1996, in response to which then-US President Bill Clinton largely oversaw US military power. Performed what was called the largest military demonstration in Asia after the Vietnam War.
The world is not concerned with Taiwan so that Taiwan is completely cut off from the world and neglected. Despite being diplomatically alone, Taiwan is counted as Asia’s largest trading country. It is the world’s leading country in the production of computer technology and its economy is also very strong. Of course, while dealing with other countries, it makes them believe that they believe in One China, yet there are many countries who want to build a relationship with Taiwan. But they do not make the country embassy. They have made relations officers or promoters of culture, business promoters or representatives of cultural organizations. Diplomatic relations are only with China.
Relationship between China and Taiwan
Taiwan’s electronic and industry as well as GDP is good, that’s why many countries are attracted towards it. On the other hand, the influence of China has also increased in the last few decades. Professor Swaran Singh explains that not only commercial and social relations between Taiwan and China have also deepened. There is movement between the two through direct air services and sea vessels but many times there is outrage. The idea of ’one country, two system’ was put forward by Shao Pin, the other big leader of China, and Hong Kong and Macao have been linked on the basis of this idea. Hong Kong has a different flag, police is different, currency is different. Macao also has considerable leeway. But they consider themselves an integral part of China. But this is not the case with Taiwan. China has been talking about such a system with Taiwan but it has not been successful.
