In a classic case, what is old is new again, the Mediterranean diet has replaced the keto as the current eating plan, and fitness superstar Kayla Itsines is on board 100% during her pregnancy. “I’ve always followed a balanced Mediterranean diet, since that’s what works for me and my body, being Greek, it’s part of my heritage and it’s what I grew up eating,” she tells Well + Good when asked why. She is so fanatical about diet.
Of course, the pregnancy was, well, pregnancy, initially Itsines had to make some adjustments to a family feeding plan. “At the beginning of my pregnancy trip, I felt nauseous for the first 12 weeks, so I consumed more dry food than I normally would,” she says. “But since I am 23 weeks pregnant and in my second trimester, I feel much better and I am quite back to eating my normal Mediterranean diet, which consists of lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, rice, grilled meats and olive oil” .

For Itsines, breakfast typically consists of mushrooms and spinach on toast or scrambled eggs and kale on toast. Lunch is homemade chicken girosoles, with a wrap of whole wheat, lettuce, tomato, cucumber and tzatziki dressing. Between meals, you will drink fresh fruit, depending on the season. And for dinner, Itsines fills his plate with grilled meat (usually chicken or lamb), brown rice and grilled vegetables drizzled with olive oil. Like all, Itsines has cravings for sweets, and when she does, she will make a bowl of Greek yogurt with honey.
Now, that’s a meal plan that everyone, pregnant or not, can appreciate.
