1. Understand the Railway Group D Exam Pattern

Candidates must have knowledge about the Computer Based Test (CBT) before the start of preparation. The previous notification of CEN 08/2024 provided the following pattern. This pattern is to be followed until confirmation through the relevant notification for 2027.

  • Mathematics: 25 questions and 25 marks

  • General Intelligence and Reasoning: 30 questions and 30 marks

  • General Science: 25 questions and 25 marks

  • General Awareness and Current Affairs consider 20 questions and 20 marks

  • Total: 100 questions and 100 marks

  • Time considers 90 minutes as per the previous pattern.

  • Type of question: Multiple choice objective questions.

  • Negative marking: One third marks for each wrong answer according to the previous notification.

2. Mathematics: Practise Basic Calculations

Mathematics is one of the important subjects for those students who have passed the 10th class level. It starts from basic school concepts to solving questions within a time limit.

Topics to be covered are:

  • Number System, BODMAS, Fractions and Decimals

  • HCF & LCM

  • Ratio and Proportion, Percentage

  • Profit and Loss, Simple and Compound Interest

  • Time and Work, Pipe & Cisterns

  • Time, Speed and Distance

  • Algebra, Geometry & Trigonometry

  • Mensuration, Squares and Cubes, Statistics

  • Problems on ages, calendar and clock

3. General Intelligence and Reasoning

These questions are designed to measure a candidate’s ability to use logical reasoning for solving different types of puzzles or riddles.

Some topics that you should cover include:

  • Analogy & Classification

  • Number & Alphabetical Series

  • Coding & Decoding

  • Blood Relation

  • Direction Sense & Distance

  • Syllogisms & Venn Diagrams

  • Mathematical Operators

  • Comparison of Similarities & Differences

  • Statements, Arguments, & Assumptions

  • Data Interpretation & Analytical Reasoning

Start off by attempting simple questions, and gradually build up to doing a combination of questions. Practice some Railway Group D questions from past years.

4. General Science: Revise Class 9 and 10 Concepts

Candidates should give special attention to Physics, Chemistry and Biology at the secondary-school level. The previous official syllabus specified General Science at the Class 10 level, following the CBSE standard.

Physics

Study motion, force, work and energy, electricity, magnetism, light, sound, heat and basic scientific measurements.

Chemistry

Revise atoms and molecules, elements and compounds, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, chemical reactions and the periodic table.

Biology

Cover cells, human body systems, nutrition, respiration, reproduction, diseases, heredity, ecosystems and environmental issues.

Preparation tip: Read NCERT Science textbooks, prepare short notes and practise multiple-choice questions after completing each chapter. Revise scientific facts and definitions regularly.

5. General Awareness and Current Affairs

This chapter tests candidates’ knowledge of key happenings and their general awareness. Candidates should focus on building a solid base and not just rely on last minute preparation for current affairs.

Topics include:

  • Important national and international events

  • Indian history and the freedom movement

  • Indian geography and neighbouring countries

  • Indian Constitution and basic polity

  • Economy and important government initiatives

  • Sports, awards and notable personalities

  • Science and technology developments

  • Important days and major cultural events

Regularly read current affairs and update monthly notes. As candidates might get selected in another year from when they prepare, keep updating their notes nearer to their examinations.

6. Practise Previous-Year Papers and Mock Tests

Previous-year papers allow aspirants to get an idea about the level of difficulty, usual topics, and time management for questions.

These can be done as follows:

  1. Solving chapter-wise questions after completion of the topic.

  2. Taking one mock test per week initially.

  3. Finding mistakes in the wrong or unanswered questions.

  4. Revising the weaker areas before sitting for the next test.

  5. Raising the number of mock tests as the exam nears.

However, it must be remembered that the previous papers are just practice materials and not a certainty for questions to come in 2027.

7. Start Physical Preparation Early

The Railway Group D selection process includes a Physical Efficiency Test (PET) after the Computer Based Test (CBT). So candidates need to prepare themselves physically along with their studies. The exact physical criteria can be found in the relevant notification. One can begin with walking, running, stretching, and strength training as per one’s comfort level.

8. Check Official Railway Recruitment Updates

This recruitment was announced in CEN 09/2025, where there were 22,195 vacancies notified. The application process and examination schedule correspond to this particular recruitment, not the 2027 recruitment vacancy that has not been officially announced yet.

The applicants need to keep an eye on the official website of RRB Chandigarh and the concerned regional RRB website for the next announcement.

Conclusion

Once a candidate passes out Class 10, they should start preparing for the Railway Group D 2027 by practicing Mathematics, Reasoning, General Science and General Awareness. Revise concepts from school textbooks, solve multiple choice questions, previous year papers and follow proper revision timetable. The physical fitness of the candidates who want to get Railway Jobs should also be considered while making the preparation plan. The most important thing to remember is that the old syllabus is a reference guide and follows the rules and dates laid down in the official RRB notification for those who have been confirmed for their RRB.
