The state government appointed the officer of the Indian Police Service of 1991, Anuj Sharma, for the post of Kolkata police commissioner.
The Central Bureau of Investigation had questioned Kumar regarding the Saradha chip fund scam earlier this month. The agency filed a contempt petition in the Supreme Court alleging that Kumar, the West Bengal government and the police did not cooperate with the scam investigation.
The CBI has also claimed that Kumar fled when he issued a repeated citation in the case last month. The agency alleged that the Calcutta Police prevented its officials from entering Kumar’s residence on February 3.
On the same night, Banerjee began the “Let’s Save the Constitution” protest in Esplanade, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah of planning a “coup”. The CBI alleged that Kumar was present in this dharna, a claim that the police officer denied in the Supreme Court on Monday.
On February 5, the Supreme Court ordered Kumar to appear for interrogation and cooperate with the CBI in his investigation. Kumar led the Special Investigation Team created by the Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, to investigate the scam before the superior court delivered the case to the CBI.
