‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ and ‘Thackeray’: Bollywood’s bold take on politics

If you think your 2018 was weird, think about the year Bollywood had it. Unexpected movies have shaken the box office, actors whose films were considered “a sure thing” have sunk spectacularly. All eyes are now in 2019, in anticipation of other surprising trends, which could bring the new year.

It is safe to say, however, that Bollywood is definitely starting with an explosion. Just in time for Republic Day, and in the same year as the general elections of the world’s largest democracy, two political dramas will come to the silver screen.

The highly anticipated trailer for ‘Thackeray’, a biopic about the founder of Shiv Sena, Bal Thackeray, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, was dropped yesterday. Cradled in controversy and drama, the trailer leaves you speechless. Nawaz’s amazing resemblance to Thackeray is just the tip of the iceberg. The film also stars Amrita Rao, and is scheduled for release on January 25.

Do you think you can not wait for the movie? Here is something that could help.

After a lot of teasing on social media by Anupam Kher, the trailer for “The Accidental Prime Minister” was finally published.

Kher, in his title role of Dr. Manmohan Singh, gets everything to go well: the look, the voice, the march. The plot of the film is narrated by Akshaye Khanna’s character, Sanjaya Baru, who acted as Singh’s media adviser from 2004-2008. The film is a film adaptation of Baru’s revealing memoirs about the former prime minister’s mandate. The film opens on January 11.

Two politicians Two ideologies. Two political parties Two people diametrically opposed. And two phenomenal actors interpreting the parts. January could not come before!
